Crusaders top Argonauts, 48-36
The Argonauts were ahead of host Morris Catholic 36-30 after the 182 lb. bout, but a forfeit at 195 tied the match. But, as has been the case much of the season, a failure to stay off their backs cost RPS the match.
The loss wasn’t from lack of trying, however, as Landon Coutros (113) nailed a pin in 3:57, even with a heavily bandaged hand. Chris Peer (138) decked his man in 2:58, and Co-Captains Peter Coutros (145) and Cody Epps (182) unleashed the beast and planted their opponents in just over a minute each. Tyler Connell garnered six via forfeit at 106 and Alex Kochanik did the same at 132 to round out the Prep scoring. David Shalat (126) once again wrestled an inspired match, beating his opponent 10-5 before slipping and yielding a pin.
North Plainfield’s rapidly improving wrestling team visited RPS and delivered a clear message: Winning is contagious. All of the Canucks except one walked away victorious, and most of those victories were by pin. The sole winner from RPS was Cody Epps (182) whose 1:47 pin averted a shutout.
It was also Senior Night at RPS, and four Argonaut wrestlers were invited to bring their parents on the mat for a final tribute. Chris Peer (138), Peter Coutros (145) Mike Riccio (152) and Cody Epps (182) all appeared on an RPS mat for the final time in their wrestling careers. Each greeted and thanked their parents and presented their mothers with a rose.
The wrestling coaches extend their thanks and appreciation to the wrestlers and their families for their commitment to RPS Wrestling.
Grapplers split two at Tri-Meet
February 4, 2012
The Argonaut wrestling team traveled cross-city to New Brunswick HS for a tri-meet with the host school and North Brunswick.
The match with the Raiders came first, but not many points came with it, as only Tyler Connell (106), Peter Coutros (145) and Cody Epps (182) won their bouts. Connell pinned his man in 1:58, and Coutros and Epps gutted out tough decisions against strong opponents, providing the only 12 points Prep would amass. The final score was 60-12.
But the Argonauts reversed that loss against New Brunswick, winning a thrilling contest by a 39-34 score. The reason for the win was that Prep limited New Brunswick’s bonus points by staying off their backs in a couple of key matches. Perhaps the most exciting win went to Frosh Tyler Connell (106) in a Sudden Victory bout with the match on the line. Down by just 2 points, the wiry Connell tied the match with a late reversal forcing OT, then took his opponent down within 15 seconds for the decision. Soph Diego Miller (120) saved the team a point by averting a tech fall, and frosh David Shalat showed exceptional determination by fighting off his back and denying his opponent a pin. Though he dropped his bout 8-6, he allowed only 3 points to go to New Brunswick, as did Senior Mike Riccio (152) who dropped a 4-2 decision.
Winning by pin for the Argonauts were Chris Peer (138-2:58), Peter Coutros (145-1:01), Jack Williams (160-0:30) and Cody Epps (182-0:12). Jack Vajda (220) and Nick Montesino (HWT) each garnered six points by forfeit.
