Our Varsity Swim team lost a close one to Morristown Beard after the long winter break and not training had its usual effect on performance. Our boys team competed against Franklin High School at the old College Ave. pool and won a close one by 5 points! The Franklin girls were strong and they defeated our girls on the same day. Our first ever meet with Union Catholic was tied going into the last relay and we needed to win the event to win the meet.Tim Mangier, Todd Costa, Joe Del Buono and Kevin Hong met the challenge with the win which allowed a 2 point win over Union Catholic! A first ever meet with Cranford High School proved too competitive for us and we lost116 to 54. Exam week took its toll on our training and our times reflected that losing to Wardlaw by 20. Our meet on friday vs Blair yielded some improved times and an exciting swim by Kevin Hong. Kevin smashed the school record for the 100 free set by Todd Haedrich in 1989 of 49.98. Kevin went 49.27 to win the event and set a new school record. The only records not broken by Kevin are the 50 free (which he tied) and the 100 breast. Freshman Joe Del Buono is following Kevin very close in both the 200 and 500 free. His club team times are actually better than Kevins which were set in his sophmore year. Only two meets remain: Pennington and Ranney. Our State Championship is held at The Lawrenceville School on Feb. 7 & 8.
Rutgers Prep defeats Hun 89-81 during the second week of competition. After the loss to Blair Academy the swim team defeated Hun on friday at Mercer County Community College. Prep took first place in 7 of 11 events two of which were relays. Personal Best times were achieved by numerous swimmers. Rahul De Sai, Joe Del Buono, Elan Axelbank, Todd Costa, Mike Fedorochko, Sam Weingarten, Sam Zenkel, Tim Mangier, Zaid Kahn, Kyle Shapiro, Drew DiPane Alan Lesson and Elena Georges all swam personal best times. After Winter break, Prep swimmers travel to Morristown Beard School to start 2012.
The RPS swim team opened up on Friday at Blair Academy. Club swimmers Kevin Hong and Joe DelBuono easily took first place in their individual events and strongly contributed to both the 200 free and 400 free relay teams. Rutgers Prep, after 8 practices, had good performances from most all of its returning lettermen. Mike Fedorochko, Sam Weingarten, Kyle Shapiro. Zaid Khan, Alan Lesson, Todd Costa, Drew Dipane, Elena Georges, and Rahul De Sai matched or bettered their 2011 State times from last year! We look forward to Tim Magier returning from injury and Elan Axelbank completing his required practices as we prepare for Friday's meet with Hun.
