Coach Ortelli

Head Coach Tim Ortelli

         Tim Ortelli became the head boys basketball coach at Rutgers Prep in April 2010 following a highly successful 15 year run at Bridgewater-Raritan Regional High School. Coach Ortelli is a sought after clinician who has spoken at more than 50 basketball camps, the NJSIAA annual state coaches clinic, as well as the famed 5-Star basketball camp under the direction of Howard (Garf) Garfinkel. Coach Ortelli also amassed 4 NBA coaching championships in his 18-year tenure at this prestigious camp.  In addition, coach Ortelli founded the Fundamental Formula Basketball Camps in 1994. Attended by more than 7,000 campers, this camp will continue its tradition at Rutgers Prep of providing an excellent basketball experience.

 


Justin Razzano


Justin Razzano is in his 2nd season as an assistant coach with Rutgers Preparatory Boys Varsity Basketball program . He has been coaching basketball at the youth and High school levels for the last 8 years. Justin instills a team focused atmosphere to help the kids to perform to their full abilities.  Justin has coached with some of the top coach's and programs in the state winning both State and County Championships.

Ryan Shellhammer

 

Ryan enters his fifth year with the Rutgers Preparatory School basketball progam. He began his coaching career as the Junior Varsity coach at his alma mater St. Peter's HS in New Brunswick from 2005 - 2007. During the 2008 season, Ryan assisted girls basketball coach Mary Klinger as they went onto win the Somerset County, NJISAA State Prep B and Patriot Conference Championships. Ryan enters his third season as the boys Junior Varsity Coach. His inspiration to coach comes from his father, Joe Shellhammer, who spent forty years coaching various sports at St. Peter's HS. Joe was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2006.

 

Alex Mahoney

Alex grew up in Bridgewater, NJ and played his high school basketball at Bridgewater-Raritan High School under legendary coach, Tim Ortelli (Rutgers Prep’s current head basketball coach).  While at Bridgewater-Raritan, Alex helped lead the Panthers to back-to-back 20 win seasons.  As a junior guard, he helped Bridgewater-Raritan win the Somerset County Championship and was named tournament MVP in 1998.  In 1999, the Panthers returned back to the County Championship game, but lost in a triple overtime thriller to Somerville.

Alex continued his playing career at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ.  He played 4 years there for the Lions, and was named the team captain as a senior.  He graduated in May 2003 with a degree in Marketing.  

After graduation, Alex worked as a Project Manager for almost 3 years in South Jersey, but changed careers to become a high school teacher and basketball coach.  While earning his degree in Math Education, he began coaching at Shawnee High School in Medford, NJ under legendary coach Joe Kessler.  In his second year as an assistant coach, Shawnee won their 5th State Championship in 2007.

In the 2007-2008 school year, Alex obtained a mathematics teaching job at his alma mater, Bridgewater-Raritan, as he returned home to coach with his former coach and mentor, Tim Ortelli.  After coaching there for 4 years, he re-joined Coach Ortelli on the Rutgers Prep staff.
