PLAYER TO WATCHRutgers Prep received the second seed in the Somerset County Tournament -- its highest ever -- and
Ian Glassmanhad a lot to do with it. The senior shortstop/pitcher leads the team with a robust .581 batting average and 13 stolen bases. His .658 on-base percentage is tied for the club lead with Myles Diggins.
Glassman already has accumulated three three-hit games and one four-hit game. A pure contact hitter with a keen eye, he's only struck out once in 38 plate appearances, while drawing seven walks.

Rutgers Prep's baseball program has come quite a distance. From the days when the Argonauts were reluctant to enter the Somerset County Tournament, to one that has made consecutive trips to the county semifinals.
That is not enough for a program that stopped thinking of those kinds of milestones as moral victories several years ago.
"We have a lot to prove, to get through big games that we've stalled out in," said Prep coach Larry Santowasso, who's starting his 15th season. "We have upped the schedule to see if we can break through. I think we have a lot of talent, anything is possible. We pretty much have everybody back with some fresh faces.
"We felt we were more talented than we showed (last year)," Santowasso said, "especially throughout some struggles. We got off to great start, but Ian (Glassman) hurt his arm, we lost six straight. There are peaks and valleys to a season, but we want to be consistently good."
Rutgers Prep has two Division-I scholarship players in their lineup who want to make every last effort to get their teammates into another round of the counties and possibly help deliver the Argonauts their first county championship.
Senior shortstop/pitcher Glassman (University of Maryland at Baltimore County) and senior third baseman/pitcher Myles Diggins (University or Rhode Island) think the Argonauts can do it.
Last year, the Argonauts lost a six-inning 11-1 mercy-rule decision to county champ Montgomery in the county semifinals. The next day they suffered a 9-2 drubbing by Princeton Day in the state Prep B final.
It was an ugly finish to what had been such a promising season. The team finished 14-11 with a Patriot Conference title, but, like Santowasso said, there's still a lot to be proven.
"We've definitely taken a different mindset," said Glassman, who was 5-1 with a 2.02 earned run average and hit .514 with 36 hits and 22 RBI. "Every year we want to win. It's not every year you get to the county semis and the state finals in two days. It was a rough couple of days.
"Our goal is to win the counties and states," he added.
The team got a boost both on and off the field before last season when Far Hills' resident Diggins transferred over from perennial Non-Public A state title contender Seton Hall Prep. He took the train to West Orange from Bernardsville, then a cab over to the Seton Hall Prep campus as a freshman and sophomore, and tired of it. Diggins said he may have tried too hard last season to impress his new teammates. He batted .370 with nine homers and 34 RBI.
He said he appreciated the looser atmosphere that surrounded him at Rutgers Prep, but said the competition wasn't much different than what the Pirates faced in the regular season.
"I came in on that small field (at Rutgers Prep) and I tried to impress everybody," he said. "I don't feel that anymore."
Diggins said that the team has to play better around Glassman.
"We have to take some pressure off Ian on the mound, we have to score," he said.
Glassman said that the key will be staying away from issuing walks, pitching well and hitting. It sounds simplistic enough.
"We've all been there before, some of us multiple times, we're begging to win," Glassman said. "We need to go out with a bang."
Congratulations to Ian Glassman, Myles Diggins, and Michael Klinger on being named team captains for the 2011 season.

Congratulations Ian Glassman named 2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America. Under Armour Pre-Season All-Americans actually showcase and compete against each other, making it the only “non paper” Pre-Season All-American honor. The 2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-Americans are selected based on a strong performance at a previous Baseball Factory Event or recommendation by a pro scout. The 2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament will feature the top high school players in a 20-team wood bat tournament. Teams will be broken up by region to compete for the Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament championship. Additionally, players will rotate amongst stations that include pro-style workouts, video and instruction. Pro scouts representing 24 of the 30 Major League Baseball teams attended the event in the past two years. We expect a similar turnout in 2011. Many of the scouts will work the event as part of the coaching staff. In addition, the event was covered by Baseball America, RISE Magazine and MLB.com. *2012 and 2013 Grads, by competing in the 2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament you will be automatically considered by our scouts to be selected to the 2011 Under Armour All-America Game. The Under Armour All-America Game will be held at Wrigley Field. The 2010 Under Armour All-America Game, at Wrigley Field, featured three players that competed in the Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament including Dante Bichette, Jr., Bryan Brickhouse and Connor McKay..

Baseball Signs Six for 2012 Season 12/21/2010 Head Coach John Jancuska BALTIMORE—Head baseball coach John Jancuska announced Tuesday that Jon Cobo, Vince Corbi, Anthony Gatto, Ian Glassman, Kevin Ladner and David Superdock have all signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Retrievers in the 2011-12 school year. “He had a very strong signing class this past year and we think we followed that up with another excellent group this year,” Jancuska said. “We feel that all four pitchers can compete for starting spots right away and that the middle infielders can compete to play when they get to Baltimore and give us great depth at those positions.” Glassman, a 5-10 middle infielder from Basking Ridge, N.J., was named All-State and All-Prep First Team in 2009 and 2010, as well as All-Patriot Conference each of his first three years at Rutgers Prep School. He has been named a Under Armour/Baseball Factory Preseason All-American for 2011 and was named as one of Collegiate Baseball’s Preseason Top 100 Players in New Jersey in 2010. Glass also led to the New Jersey Prep B State Finals in 2008 and 2010 and holds the school record for career (.602) and season (.687 in 2009) on-base percentage.
Myles Diggins
Head coach Jim Foster has announced that eight student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Rhode Island baseball program, beginning in the fall of 2011. "This class may be one of the most talented classes we have put together here at URI," said Foster. "On the pitching side, we were able to sign three quality arms while also adding some talented position players who will have the chance to be very good for us. I think we kept two of the best Rhode Islanders here in our state to play and that is very important to me. These young men are all quality individuals from great families and will represent our program and URI very well on the field and in the classroom. They will be great members of our community and we are proud to welcome them into our baseball program." Myles Diggins - 3B - Rutgers Preparatory High School - Far Hills, N.J. Coached by Larry Santowasso at Rutgers Prep... Helped lead his team to a second-place finish in the Prep B State Championship... Earned first team all-conference, all-area and all-state prep honors as a junior, where he he hit .385 with 18 extra base hits, 35 RBI and a school-record 10 home runs... Also is a forward on his school's basketball team. Foster on Diggins: Myles is a very physical kid. He swings the bat well and is going to be a plus defender at third base. We see him a run-producer in the middle of our lineup as he has a chance to be an impact player early on.
The Star Ledger and nj.com have released Ian Glassman signed a Scholarship with The University of Maryland Baltimore County and Myles Diggins signed a Scholarship with The University of Rhode Island.

Tory Arnesen, Dan Piccirillo, and Andrew Verri hit back to back to back Homeruns on three straight pitches. Dan Piccirillo added a 4th homerun later in the inning leading Rutgers Prep past Franklin in the opening round of the 2008 Somerset County Tournament 14-7.
